My husband and I read through Percy Jackson and the Olympians written by Rick Riordan, and we had a fantastic time. It’s amazing how much easier it is to wash dishes when someone is reading a good story to you!
The first series of five books follows young Percy Jackson as he discovers his mythological parentage (turns out he’s the son of Poseidon) and learns that the Ancient Greek myths are much more alive in the present-day than most people realize. Each book features a new crisis and “quest” with different monsters to conquer and lessons to learn. The series makes for a great crash-course in Greek mythology, in addition to providing a fun adventure. All are great reads, whether you are a kid, have a kid, or are just a kid-at-heart ;). Personally, I thought they were great! I had a lot fun, even if they are technically written for children. One of my favorite parts is actually a line from Annabeth (a daughter of Athena if there ever was one) in chapter 11 of The Lightening Thief where she explains to Percy that “the real world is where the monsters are.” Funny how a kid’s book can point out things that we often miss in our day-to-day lives. The real monsters aren’t in our minds or under our beds; they’re out there, where we see and deal with them every single day. My only real complaint on the series was that it took all five books for Annabeth and Percy to figure out their feelings for each other. That’s a bit too slow on the romantic development for me. Then again, they do start out the series rather young (around age 12), so I can’t complain too much. After all the teenage pregnancies I saw as a school nurse, I am of the persuasion that confessions of undying love and devotion are best saved for legal age. Thus, I prefer to make my characters a bit older. Also, I’m a sucker for a love story (duh!), so waiting for five books is really, really hard for me to do! Still, good books :). And while I probably won’t be writing books for middle-schoolers any time soon – although, anything is possible! – I will keep writing my happily-ever-afters (and hopefully convince my husband to start reading me the second series sometime in the near future). My Blog:I have two passions: reading and writing. You can't write good stories without first reading good stories - that's my theory, anyway. So this is where I'll share with you the depth of those passions: background on what and why I write, as well as talking about the books that I read and how they impact my writing. Archives
