Last time, I started a post regarding my issues with contemporary romance novels; including (but not limited to) the lack of communication, the over-abundance of sex, and the unrelate-able heroines. Today, I’ll look on the brighter side of what I’ve discovered from reading such books.
After all, it’s not like I haven’t read every single Dark Ones novels that Katie MacAlister has ever written and enjoyed them (though, admittedly, the presence of vampires and supernatural forces added A LOT), or that I don’t find her historical romance novels to be highly entertaining. But without paranormal circumstances or a century gap to make things interesting… Well, lately, I’ve found my tolerance for the inanity of contemporary romance to be steadily decreasing, and maybe it’s time to admit that these just aren’t the right books for me anymore. They’re not deep enough, and I don’t like the message they send about what love should be like. Personally, I love the intellectual and emotional aspects of a relationship; just look at Jesse and Emer’s conversations. Being physical isn’t the only part that matters – it’s not even the most important part. I’m not saying it’s not important, but it’s not the element I want to spend all my paper on. (No sex scenes from me – I’ll write my characters into the bedroom, but the rest is up to your imagination ?.) I like watching characters talk and get to know each other. I like to see them argue as their different beliefs and opinions struggle against their growing feelings. Will they overcome the crisis? How? Tumbling into bed certainly wouldn’t fix that in reality, and I refuse to fix issues that way in my books. The world is already full of “bad” relationship examples in tabloids and TV dramas – we need more “good” examples of how real relationships should work. Even if it’s just fiction. (Sigh) Guess we should rule out “adult romance novels” from my future career options. They’re just not enough for me anymore. I’m much too wrapped up in exploring other relationship dynamics, and wanting to set a positive image for my audience. Get used to characters that talk things out and solve their problems without sex or excessive interpersonal drama, because that’s what I’ve got to offer! What do you think? My Blog:I have two passions: reading and writing. You can't write good stories without first reading good stories - that's my theory, anyway. So this is where I'll share with you the depth of those passions: background on what and why I write, as well as talking about the books that I read and how they impact my writing. Archives
